This is a view from the top of hill 262 overlooking the Falaise Gap. The Polish 1st Armoured division fought Germans on this hill in August 1944. The German forces were retreating from right to left in the picture, trying to escape from the Allied break out. A German body was found on one of the farms in the gap only the week before we arrived there. So many soldiers were killed here that the lands went black with flies for days afterwards.
