After the ceremony ends the colours of the British are marched out of the Menin Gate. The whole thing has taken only 15 minutes, but the streets have been closed and the local residents have stood in sombre memory of the great war. I can hardly imagining such a thing ever happening in Britain, people would be complaining about disruptions to their day and not being able to drive to the shops. The strangest thing is that this ceremony happens every single day without fail, yet it has lost none of its power. |
